Fall Masterworks 2024-2025

November 1 @ 7:30 pm

“Mind, Body and Soul”

Friday, November 1, 2024
7:30 pm
First Presbyterian Church

This concert features some of the most well-known chamber orchestral pieces that all audience members will recognize.

Mozart’s final symphony, Jupiter, completed in 1788, is often hailed as one of the greatest symphonic works ever written. It reflects a synthesis of Baroque and Classical styles, featuring complexity and grandeur. The symphony’s nickname, “Jupiter,” was likely not given by Mozart but by a contemporary publisher, reflecting the work’s grand and heroic qualities.

Composed in 1946, Stravinsky’s Concerto in D represents his neoclassical phase, blending modernist techniques with forms and idioms from the past. This work showcases Stravinsky’s ability to create complexity through rhythmic interplay and tight orchestration. Its dissonant yet tightly organized harmonies demonstrate his commitment to innovation within classical forms.

Written in 1880, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings is one of his most beloved compositions, filled with lush, Romantic melodies and elegant string writing. Tchaikovsky’s Serenade blends Romantic passion with Classical elegance. It was composed as an homage to his admiration for Mozart, yet it contains the sweeping lyricism and emotional depth characteristic of his own style.

Together, these works span a range of styles from the late Classical (Mozart), to Neoclassical (Stravinsky), to lush Romanticism (Tchaikovsky). While Mozart’s Jupiter exhibits masterful contrapuntal techniques, Stravinsky’s Concerto showcases rhythmic invention and modernist harmonies. Tchaikovsky’s Serenade, by contrast, brings out warmth and expressivity through rich string textures. These pieces, when performed together, will provide a fascinating juxtaposition of compositional eras and approaches.
